The Austin Experience: Day 4

For four days Ev and I were hosting one of our good friends (Mike) from high school at our house. Here’s a chronicle of our escapades broken into each day’s debauchery.

Get caught up with Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.

Tuesday

At last it was our final 24 hours to show off Austin to Mike. We had a

great time so far, and Tuesday had its work cut out for itself to impress us. Like Monday, we started out at Whole Foods for breakfast, this time getting coffee and breakfast tacos before I headed to work. Mike then took a self-guided tour of the grocery mothership to see what all the hype was about. Later when asked, he didn’t give the sense that he was completely impressed. What does he know… Anyway, after Whole Foods he walked the entire length of 6th St past I-35 over to the Texas State Cemetery. He didn’t walk all that way for nothing though. Instead, he was killing a little time before getting in line at, where else?

Franklin Barbecue! Now this is what I’m talking about. He got in line right around when they opened at 11am and texted me at 12:30pm to say he was about 15 people from

getting inside. I arrived and hopped in line with about 10 people to go. Not a bad deal for me, right? I raved like nobody’s business about the chopped beef sandwich, basically forcing him to get one. So we each got one, plus a pound of brisket to share and/or take home. Cue angel hymns and beam of light from the sky:

Franklin x 4

Franklinsanity

Even the unflappable Mike was impressed with the meal, pointing out the obvious that it was on another level than The Salt Lick. With our gastropods (remember, my coined word for stomach) full, I dropped Mike off at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum and headed back to work. He explored most of the three-story museum and became fast friends with a somewhat aggressive, nonthreatening octogenarian named Barbara. The weight of BBQ in his belly slowed him down a bit though and he finished up his time in the gift shop before I picked him up.

All the Texas history you need.

With one meal to go, there was really only one thing to do. Food trailers! How fitting was it then that the first ever Trailer Food Tuesdays was happening this very night! Check out my review for all the details on the event. It was great exposure for the trailers and I was happy Mike got to try a lot of the more popular trucks all in one place. We hit four of the nine trucks and filled ourselves beyond any notion of a comfortable level. Perfect way to end things.

Wow. Whirlwind. If all that doesn’t scream Austin, I don’t know what does. I’m sure there are other things we missed out on, like The Oasis, any of the craft breweries, and perhaps a day trip out to hill country. For Ev and me it’s

been fun being tourists in our own city and doing things we never do because, well, “we can always go do that”. So the real question is, who’s going to be our next victim visitor to all things Austin?
