only concerns were “which shoes?” and “how far?”. Sometimes I would set my alarm 30 minutes earlier or later, but never more complicated than that. It was nice. And then things changed. I was bitten by the triathlon bug just as I was warned would happen in Austin. Life got more complicated–three times as complicated in fact. Running and I talked about a more open relationship. I shifted my goals away from marathons and towards triathlons. And then I took a leap and signed up for the Ironman 70.3 Austin. Much like signing up for my first marathon, I was scared; but I was brave. Until I realized I was an idiot. But there was running, waiting to take me back. So I decided to double down with running. “Qualify for Boston” became the name of the game. And qualify I did. So now, as I’m taking my well-deserved time to recovery, my thoughts are wandering. How about that triathlon thing? What’s left to prove with running?

<

p>And so with more careful planning, I’m taking the leap again. I registered for the Ironman 70.3 Austin. I have 20 weeks to relearn how to swim, spend hours on the bike, and make sure I don’t forget how to run. For now there are no goals but to finish. Later on I may set a specific goal, but that’s for a triathlete-in-training to decide. A training plan is taking shape and will be posted soon. A few shorter races will come and go too before the 70.3 gets here. In the meantime, I’ll likely take the same approach to the triathlon as I did for running–put in the time and hope for the best.

Franklin, My Dear

Hope.  A shade of a glimmer of hope.  That was all I could hold on to.  With lines taking up to 3 hours to get in the door, and with potentially nothing to show for it, when would I get another chance to enjoy Franklin Barbecue?  With its meteoric rise to national fame, locals and visitors alike became all too aware of the hidden gem now located on  dangerous  up-and-coming E 11th Street.  Great for Franklin, bad for Mike.  Or is it?

Why The Face? – McDonalds

Oh irony, how I enjoy you.  Recent news says that McDonald’s is the new Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon partner.  Sounds innocent enough until you realize that a fast food company responsible for a sizeable part of the obesity epidemic is partnering with an endurance event management company.  As Runner’s World reports “McDonald’s will be the “official quick service restaurant sponsor” of the events”.

I’m not a fan of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s parent company, Competitor Group, but not because of this.  I don’t like them because their events are bad.  And this doesn’t help how I perceive their image.

Idea!  I can see a great joint venture in the near future along the lines of a 26.2 Big Mac marathon for those who can’t run but who can eat 26 Big Macs in one sitting.  To be fair, McDonalds says this is about spreading the word of their more nutritious options and promoting a balanced diet.  Regardless, this is on Rock ‘n’ Roll and Competitor Group for making money-guided decisions rather than sticking to principles.

WTF?

Let’s Get Serious

Alright folks. No more messing around. The biggest race of my running life is a week away. I’ve been training like crazy. I’ve been tracking the weather (like crazy). I’ve

diet. So far, alcohol, large amounts of dairy, and overly greasy food are off the table. Beans? No thanks. Broccoli? Apparently not. Gluten and caffeine are going to be severely limited too, though not cut out completely. I plan to eat lots of oatmeal, bananas, rice, fish, potatoes, and chicken.

<

p style=”text-align: left;”>Besides diet, I’m also going to do my best to get more sleep. My current 6 hours per night average isn’t cutting it. Basically my plan is to adopt a bland, responsible, adult lifestyle for the next week. I know they say don’t change anything you haven’t practiced, but I can’t imagine that applies to dropping bad habits. I guess we’ll find out! Until then we’ll be all serious all the time.

Vermont Status Check: 13 Days to go

My last long run is in the books.  17 miles (well, 16.3).  56 miles last week.  Two weeks to go.  Things are starting to get real.  Friday and Saturday served up back-to-back hard runs and my body exceeded expectations.  Friday I crushed a hard tempo workout.  Saturday was all kinds of hills and speed.  Both were fantastic.  All in all, I’m feeling strong right now.

On the flip side, the weather forecast is playing some sick joke on me.  When I first started tracking it on May 7th, everything looked amazing!  Like, too good to be true.  Well, I guess it was because a few days later, it skyrockeded 20 degrees to near-Austin temperatures.  Like any good runner, I started moping.  But!  Yesterday things took a turn for the best!  Inexplicably the race day high dropped 20 degrees again back down to darn-near perfect.  Yay!  Or so I thought.  Today, whoever fudged the keyboard yesterday figured it out, and updated the race day weather back up to 83 degrees.  Sigh.

No matter!  My recent hard workouts were awesome and the weather here was the same as the current race predictions.  I’m feeling good.  There’s still a lot of time until race day, but I think we can do this!

NATY or Nice

The North Austin Trailer Yard (aka The NATY) is Austin’s newest food trailer park!  Like most other food trailer lots, it’s home to a variety of specialty cuisines (yes, “hot dog” is a cuisine).  Unlike all other trailer lots, this one is in North Austin!  Not Downtown.  Not South.  Not East.  North.  And to officially kick things off, The NATY had a grand opening party on Saturday to get the word out about North Austin’s new trailer digs.

Vermont Status Check: 19 Days to go

As any marathon runner can tell you, tapering (the last couple weeks of a training plan where mileage and intensity decrease), can make you a little stir crazy.  For months and months any extra energy you might have gets immediately exhausted during the next training run.  So when the running decreases, the excess time and energy increases, which can be a dangerous thing.  You start to notice a little ache here or pain there that you’re pretty sure wasn’t there yesterday.
