only concerns were “which shoes?” and “how far?”. Sometimes I would set my alarm 30 minutes earlier or later, but never more complicated than that. It was nice. And then things changed. I was bitten by the triathlon bug just as I was warned would happen in Austin. Life got more complicated–three times as complicated in fact. Running and I talked about a more open relationship. I shifted my goals away from marathons and towards triathlons. And then I took a leap and signed up for the Ironman 70.3 Austin. Much like signing up for my first marathon, I was scared; but I was brave. Until I realized I was an idiot. But there was running, waiting to take me back. So I decided to double down with running. “Qualify for Boston” became the name of the game. And qualify I did. So now, as I’m taking my well-deserved time to recovery, my thoughts are wandering. How about that triathlon thing? What’s left to prove with running?

<

p>And so with more careful planning, I’m taking the leap again. I registered for the Ironman 70.3 Austin. I have 20 weeks to relearn how to swim, spend hours on the bike, and make sure I don’t forget how to run. For now there are no goals but to finish. Later on I may set a specific goal, but that’s for a triathlete-in-training to decide. A training plan is taking shape and will be posted soon. A few shorter races will come and go too before the 70.3 gets here. In the meantime, I’ll likely take the same approach to the triathlon as I did for running–put in the time and hope for the best.

Newb Triathlon Tips from a Recently Retired Newb Triathlete

This post is intended for two purposes.  First and foremost it should be useful to any new triathletes wading into the sport with little or no knowledge of what they’re actually getting into.  I found there to be many seemingly obvious, yet curiously undocumented, aspects to triathlons that more veteran athletes took for granted.  Hopefully this post addresses many of those questions (and, let’s be honest, fears).  The second goal is for this post to serve as something of a “remember when…”, pointing out how naive and innocent I was before getting semi-serious into the triathlon scene.  I’m sure I’m already missing some things that I’ve taken for granted at this point, but I hope this is helpful to at least one person.

Couples Tri Race Report

Sunday morning the Couples Tri came to town.  The conditions were hot, the course was tough, and the competition was competitive.  My goal, which wasn’t really explicit, was to be faster than last time.  Since this race and the Rookie Tri are at the same location, with identical bike courses and transition areas, it made it easy to compare apples to apples.  Each leg of the race is similar enough to the CapTexTri that I can see how I’ve progressed.  So how did it go?  Well keep reading to find out.  (Here’s my race preview if you want to get caught up to speed first)

Couples Tri Race Preview

Hi. Don’t take this as “You never tell me anything!!” It was just a mistake and I thought I had told you. It looks like I forgot to mention that I’m signed up for a triathlon this Sunday. Yep. I signed up for it like 2 days before switching over to marathon training and I guess never really brought it up. In any event, I wanted to let you know that I’ll be tri-ing it up at the Couples Triathlon this Sunday out at Decker Lake (the same place where

The CapTexTri Race Report

The Capital of Texas Triathlon took downtown Austin by storm on Memorial Day.  I registered just two weeks before for the Sprint distance, figuring the Olympic distance would be too much for my second-ever tri.  Compared to the Rookie Tri this race felt like the big leagues.  There was serious prize money ($12,500 to the winner), pro athletes, and plenty sponsors and vendors.  It also had more than its share of breakdowns and issues, but I won’t get into that here.  Here’s how everything went for me as I’m still trying to find my way in this whole triathlon jungle.

Replacement 70.3 Race

The sting of realizing my brain lapse hasn’t quite worn off yet. With the pain still fresh I’m looking forward to what event I can use as a replacement target race. There aren’t many requirements that the race needs to meet, but they’re pretty specific: it needs to be a Half Ironman (70.3) distance and it needs to fall some time between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Right now I have two options in mind.

My Own Idiocracy

Dear friend reader, yours truly has really done it this time. I know you’re patiently waiting for my CapTexTri Race Report, but I have some breaking news that isn’t exactly good. Due to some scheduling conflicts (and lack of putting things together), I will not be able to do the Ironman 70.3 Austin this coming October. A few months ago we received a save-the-date for my sister’s Bat Mitzvah. Well, I didn’t realize it was the same weekend as the Half Ironman, so I went ahead and registered for the race. Alas, I’m going

to try to roll my registration to next year. Worst case, I can get about 1/4 of the registration fee refunded. This is definitely my fault and could have easily been avoided.

Sigh.

I’ll be looking for another race for the fall instead. Wish me luck (and less stupidity)!

Final Pre-CapTexTri Details

As I’m reading through the participant guide for the CapTexTri I’m finding tons of useful crucial information that I didn’t know that I didn’t know.  Who would’ve thought, right?  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Triathlons are a whole lot more complicated than marathons.  For a marathon all you need to know is what time the race starts.  It helps if you line up in the appropriate “wave” based on your predicted finish time, but really you just have to go pick up your race number the day before and then just show up to the race.  For a triathlon, not so easy.

Race Week – CapTexTri

Well it’s already race week for the Cap Tex Tri!  That came around pretty quick, but I suppose that’ll happen when you register 17 days before the race.  First I need to remind you (and myself) that the race is on Monday, Memorial Day, and not Sunday.  So don’t go sending me all those “good luck” texts, tweets, facebook messages, voicemails, candygrams, Tiff’s Treats*, or anything of that nature a day early.  So race week means take it easy, right?

The Schedule Takes Shape

Since the Rookie Tri a few weeks ago I’ve had a hankering for defining my race calendar. This transition to triathlons has been fairly smooth, but I’m missing the structure and direction that I’m used to with running. You see, with running I usually had two or three races queued up. My tri calendar, however, has been disappointingly empty. I’ve my eye on a few races but hadn’t pressed that “Register” button. Until now!
