When you have a great idea and execute it well, you don’t need any gizmos or gadgets to win people over. The folks at Coolhaus have done just that with their made-to-order ice cream sandwiches. Their truck is petite, not much more than a freezer on wheels with a driver seat, but you don’t need much more than that for something as good as what they have to offer.
Turf N Surf Po’ Boy
The day after the San Antonio Marathon, recovery was my number one priority, so what better way to recover than hit up an untested food cart? Colin smartly stayed in Austin an extra day to recover too, so he joined me as we picked up Ev from work for lunch downtown. After hyping up Chi’Lantro BBQ (a lot), they graced us with an atypical Monday lunch opening. Of course I’m always down for a Korean-Mexican fusion, but this time I wanted to go with something I can’t regularly get. And what might that be? A fried catfish po’ boy of course!
Empire State of Mind
Somewhat on a whim, kind of on purpose, I entered the New York City Marathon Lottery on Tuesday. Like every other marathon in the world, there’s no easy road to the starting line. Training for weeks and months to work yourself into shape to tackle a marathon is no small feat. For New York, however, they make it just a little bit tougher. If you’re going to build up the courage to take on the biggest marathon in the world, you had better have some fast legs, lots of generous friends, or your lucky rabbit’s foot.
Run Like Someone’s Chasing You
The 2010 San Antonio Marathon took over the streets of, you guessed it, San Antonio on Sunday. Colin flew down to run the race with me, and it was the first marathon for both of us in quite awhile — Miami, Jan 2010 for me, Chicago, Oct 2009 for Colin. The worst part has been that Colin’s been holding the title of fastest marathon time between the two of us for 13 months. From my race preview, you know my goals were to beat Colin this time and beat his best time, so really I’m racing Colin twice.
Logistical Changes
Quick logistical update! I didn’t mention it previously, but our original plan for San Antonio was to set sail from Austin to San Antonio bright dark and early on race morning. That would mean leaving my apartment no later than 4:30am, which would put us in downtown San Antonio by 6am, assuming no traffic. Seemed like a pretty sound plan, except for basically every review we’ve read about the race. The main theme is that the downtown area is a cluster. Some even mentioned leaving their cars on the side of the highway and walking/running 2 miles to the starting line. Night. Mare.
Chi’Lantro BBQ – Rounds 2, 3, and 4
I started this post right after my second trip to Chi’Lantro and I’ve been 2 more times since. Rather than write three separate posts for my favorite Korean-Mexican food truck (and yes, there’s more than one in Austin), I thought I’d spare you and combine them all into one superpost. Each visit showcased a new menu item with some good and bad to each, so keeping reading to find out what you should get when you try ’em out.
Franklin Barbecue
Every so often you come learn of a hidden gem that’s been hiding in plain sight. Lucky for me (and you*) that gem happens to be a food cart less than 3 miles from my apartment. With a feature in Food & Wine Magazine and what seems to be a cult following, it was a no-brainer that I’d have to visit post haste.
Race Week – San Antonio
Well ladies and gents (and other), it’s race week! This Sunday is the San Antonio Marathon where I will crush Colin and his Chicago PR and regain the title Colin and I will amicably run together. It sure doesn’t feel like it’s this weekend though, and Colin agrees. We’ve talked about the race to no end for the last 4 months, so it isn’t so much a matter of “out of sight, out of mind.” We’ve also both been training like crazy and feeling very prepared to Rock ‘n’ Roll*.
The Gypsy Picnic – In Review
Where were you on Saturday, November 6th, 2010? If you live in (or near) Austin, you were definitely at the Gypsy Picnic. How do I know? Because the entire city and its surrounding suburbs seemed to be in attendance. The crowds that congregated on Auditorium Shores became prohibitively large, making any attempt to enjoy the event completely futile. Unfortunately, that’s probably what the Picnic will be remembered for, rather than a great celebration of Austin’s unique food scene. Sit back and get comfy, this is gonna get long*.
Jalopy Rotisserie and Press – Back to Basics
Sometimes the simpler things are, the better. You know, “less is more” and all that. Well I put that to the test on my second visit to The Jalopy Rotisserie and Press. If you remember, last time I tried the molé and Ev went with the son hong, both of which were very
tasty and paved the way for a second visit. This time I figured I’d dig into the Jalopy’s roots with a simpler option: The Original.
