Rookie is as Rookie Does

:: Trumpet Fanfare ::

There haven’t been many updates since my huge announcement snarky blog post about deciding to join the triathlon scene. I’ve been swimming twice a week, but nothing worth reporting. That’s probably because I’m still “training” for the Austin Marathon coming up

It’s In My Blood

Selfish.  Greedy.  A bit self-centered even.  Mainly selfish though.  That’s what I’m feeling right now after receiving an email from the Blood Center of Central Texas.  Apparently there is a shortage of Type O, and you’re looking at 10 tall pints of O-positive right here.  So why the self-deprecating adjectives to start things off?  Well, because it’s my blood and you can’t have it!

You Don’t Have to Go Home…

…but you can’t stay here etc etc. As was previously mentioned, I’ve been mentally making the transition into triathlon-ing. Well, not wanting to let my brain get too far ahead, my body decided it was time to hop in the pool. Now, anybody who’s anybody knows swimming isn’t exactly my jam. For me it isn’t even a matter of “swimming” as simply “not drowning”. But all irrational fears aside I knew that in order to commit to surviving completing a triathlon I’d have to get my swim on. And so I did.

Try Outs

Upon moving to Austin to work at National Instruments I learned that I had just missed the Capitol 10K.  It happens to be the largest 10K race in Texas (over 20,000 runners last year) and stirs up a lot of excitement in these parts.  I bring this all up now because the Cap10K, as it’s affectionately known, is right around the corner (kind of) at the end of March.  There was already an info session about the race (yes, in mid January) to start building interest.  With this race, NI recruits a team to take part in the race’s Corporate Challenge.  That’s where I come in.

Mission: Failure

Well, really it should be Mission: Hold That Thought.  Before heading back to Florida (to get married of course!) I mentioned I’d be scoping out the South Florida food truck scene. Well who knew a week’s worth of wedding prep plus driving an hour each way to find some food trucks would make things a bit challenging? Not this blogger! But that’s exactly what happened.  Setting my priorities straight I made the game time decision to forgo the mobile food. With a trip already planned back to SoFla for Christmas, it was easy to delay the inevitable face-stuffing for a later date.

3M Half Marathon – Registered

While I’m not training particularly hard for the Austin Marathon on February 20, I have decided to sign up for a pre-race race at the end of January.  It will be a good check to see how I’m doing in preparation for Austin, though at only three weeks before, I’m not sure how much corrective action there can be.  Anyway, it was a no-brainer considering the starting line is between my apartment and my place of workship*.

Blown Away by The Peached Tortilla

Three months ago I had my first experience with The Peached Tortilla.  At the time I was beyond impressed with the BBQ Brisket slider, so-so on the Chicken Satay taco, and undecided on the Banh Mi taco.  Shortly after my first visit, Ev and I checked them out again when the truck visited our hood for the Flying Saucer Beer Festival.  The food itself is reason enough to keep you coming back, but that’s not what blew me away this time.

I’m Still Here

Not that anyone’s asking, but yes, I’m still here.  It’s been a crazy month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, to say the least.  Running has moved to the back seat, though not forgotten completely.  Food truck eating has been relegated to the collapsible third row.  It’s not like I’ve been laying on the couch watching reruns of Lost, hopelessly trying to understand the meaning of the damn polar bear though.  Not in the slightest.  I’m not sure what you’ve been up to, but here’s my month in a nutshell.

Sushi A-Go-Go

Whenever moving to a new city, there are certain go-go-to places that you leave behind in your old home and have to discover in the new one.  For Ev and me this includes a solid Thai place, a great coffee shop, and somewhere to get delicious sushi.  In our 6 months in Austin we have found two places that consistently turn out fresh, creative sushi, so we’ve been pretty satisfied in the raw fish department.  That is, until we came across Sushi A-Go-Go.
