Goal Check: One Month Into 2012

Well January is behind us and I thought it’d be a good time to revisit how I’m doing on one of my running goals–namely, run 2012 miles in 2012. Over twelve months (which is exactly how many months are in 2012) it comes out to 168 miles per month. So far we’re looking good with January coming in at 189 miles.

Now that the 3M Half Marathon is behind me, I’m going to be getting into some serious mileage in training for Vermont. Between now and May I’ll have no shortage of miles. In fact, if all goes to plan, I’ll be closer to 250 miles per month for the next four months. That’ll set me up nicely to take the rest of the year a

speaking). Sunday’s 3M Half Marathon in Austin showcased some ideal weather (and ideal elevation) to set new personal records. It was this race last year where I set my current PR. For me I had the dual goal of beating Colin’s PR, which would inherently set my own new PR. The goal? 1:27:30. The result? Read on.

3M Half Marathon Preview, 2012 Style

Well it’s the first race of the year, so I think it’s only appropriate to do exactly what I’ve been doing for the last three years: set sandbagging goals and act surprised when I crush them.  You know what?  No.  Let’s start things off right in 2012.  I ran 3M last year and in my preview I humbly hoped to set a new PR of 1:35.  Instead I finished just a shade under 1:30 and had to come up with some explanation to all my readers.  Not this time.

I’m setting a very aggressive goal for this race.  One that I have no real reason to think I can hit.  But that’s how it should be, right?  My goal is 1:27:30.  That gives me a solid 8 second buffer to beat Colin’s PR from a few months ago.  What that also gives me is a blistering 6:40 minute per mile pace to follow.  If the weather forecast holds, we’ll be in good shape*: high 62, low 44.

I have a small army of amazing friends and family who are going to be out there cheering me on along the course.  Don’t worry, I’ve warned them that I won’t be looking too good.  I’ll let them know to just pretend I’m a rockstar and let me go on my way.

*and by “good shape” I mean 1 less excuse to lean on.

Via 313

Authentic Detroit-style pizza.  Yes, it’s a thing.  I was recently introduced to it by way of via a new food trailer on East 6th called Via 313.  It’s a black trailer parked in front of the Violet Crown Social Club and across the street from quite a few other food trucks.  It’s run by two brothers (Brandon & Zane) out of Detroit who couldn’t find good pizza in Austin.  Well they know how to make some mean “Detroit-style pizza”, or as they know it, “pizza”.

Coolhaus: Universally Awesome

“Coolhaus” is commonly my answer to “what’s your favorite food truck?” Why? For starters because I love ice cream, I love cookies, and I love things made my way. But I’ve written about my Coolhaus escapades many times over. This isn’t just another gushing about a good perfect ice cream sandwich. No. This is a whole new level of praise. You see, when it comes to being awesome, Coolhaus has the secret formula. So what makes Coolhaus so great? Let me tell you a story.

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

Happy New Year everyone!  There’s a lot to look forward to in 2012 like goals, resolutions, and the end of days.  But first I want to take a quick look back at 2011.  It really started with a shift away from running.  I completed my first triathlon (and three total).  I was sure transitioning to triathlons was going to be the theme of 2011.  Well, after a big scheduling issue, I refocused on running.

Even with my stint in the triathlon world, I had some pretty good totals for the year.  Overall I ran 1623 miles* in 219 hours 28 minutes.  That comes out to 8:06 min/mi (or 7.4 mph for you treadmill folk).  Also, my average run was a hair over 8 miles.  I set my half marathon PR and marathon PR this year too!  I consider it a big success.

As for my 2012 goals, here’s what’s up:

I want to run 2000 miles this year.  If you want to be cute, 2012 miles would work too.  That comes out to 168 miles per month.  It’s doable, but somewhat dependent on the next goal.

Here’s the big one:  I want to qualify for the Boston Marathon (run a marathon under 3:04:59).  As of now I’m off by about 11 minutes 30 seconds.  My target race is going to be the Vermont Marathon in late May with Colin.  Between now and then my training is going to get cranked up to 11.  If I qualify for Boston in Vermont, I may re-refocus on the triathlon scene.  If not, we’ll keep on chugging away.

So 2012 has its work cut out for itself.  I’ll keep blogging if you keep reading.  Deal?  Good.  Stay classy.

*PS- Colin ran 2627 miles in 2011.  1000 miles more than I did!  Insanity.

Austin Distance Challenge – Decker Update

Now that the 10K, 10 Miler, and first Half Marathon are behind us, I figured I’d give a quick update in the standings.  Since my lackluster, not-trying IBM 10K, I’ve been moving up in the standings nicely.  The results still need to be split out into the Half and Full tracks, so it’s possible there could be a shake up at the top.  In the meantime, I’m sitting pretty in 3rd place!  Now, if the two guys ahead of me are doing the Full challenge, then I’ll be in 1st place all by myself with no intention of looking back.  Regardless I should be happily perched upon the podium when the challenge comes to an end after the Austin Half Marathon in February.

#ATXBOS Food Blogger Swap

I didn’t mention it earlier, but late last month I signed up to participate in an Austin to Boston Food Swap. An Austin food blogger and Boston food blogger are paired up and send each other some hometown favorites. I was lucky enough to be paired up with Janis Tester. I mean, I write about food, but she’s a legit food blogger. Just look at her site and tell me she isn’t awesome! Although she may deny it, she’s something of a local celebrity [citation needed]. We were limited to $30 and should capture the spirit of our city in food (and cater to the preferences of the recipient).
