I’ve gotten the urge to do some real scientific, in-your-face, who’s-king-of-the-castle, head-to-head(-to-head) taste tests between some of our favorite trailers. This post is just a preview of what I have on deck. The rules are simple: 1) Each place needs to offer up a similar, nearly identical menu item for a fair competition. 2) The food needs to come from a trailer. That’s it. Let the battle(s)… BEGIN!
On Friday my very typical 8am-5pm job shifted my schedule to 3pm-11pm. I know, lucky me. Who needs Friday nights anyway? Don’t despair! I took full advantage of my weekday off hitting up quite a few trailers all over, including SoCo, South Lamar, downtown and near campus. The lucky vendors? The Mighty Cone, Bananarchy, Patika Coffee, and Conscious Cravings. How’d each of them stack up? Spoiler: Wonderfully.
As far as food trucks go The Peached Tortilla is on my short-list of best evers. They focus on the highest quality food with new and exciting flavors, all while remembering everyone’s name. Their primary focus is on tacos and sliders made with unique combinations like crunchy catfish or pork belly (banh mi). On yesterday’s visit I went with the intentions of trying one of their new burritos. And let me stop you right there– burritos are not just bigger tacos.
Last Tuesday Food Network’s Eat St. came to Austin to kickoff their five-trucks-in-five-days profile of Austin’s mobile food scene. They’re here filming for Season 2 of their show, after having already profiled ChiLantro BBQ and Lucky J’s last year for Season 1. Their first stop was at the Jalopy Rotisserie and Press, profiling Nic, his truck, and his delicious food. Lucky for me I was able to swing by and even make an on-camera appearance!
We have a lot of fun here on this blog with wordplay, double entendre, and of course, puns. You’d be hard-pressed to find a blog post without at least a little implied double meaning. As proof, Google finds 22 mentions of the word “pun” in my blog (not counting the 3 in this post)! What we’re celebrating today, however, is the literal nature of the blog’s name. The real intersection where running meats meets eating.
Hey Hey! Big news on this small blog! Next week one of Food Network / Cooking Channel’s new TV shows, Eat St. is coming to Austin! Big deal. you might say. Well, what if I were to tell you that yours truly just might make an appearance on the ol’ boob tube? Looks like I got your attention*.
With Eat St. coming to Austin, Facebook has been all a-Facebook Twitter has been all a-twitter with excitement. Tony at Food Trailers Austin has been amazing at keeping the public informed of what’s going on. You can find schedules where the Eat St. crew will be and when. And like I said, I might even make an appearance if things work out they way they should! Things kick off tomorrow (Tuesday, 5/17) at The Jalopy around lunch time at 15th & San Antonio.

Close your eyes for a moment (figuratively, or else how would you read this?). You take a bite of [something]. Wow! That’s the best [something] you’ve ever eaten! Now take another bite. Whoa, could that be the best anything you’ve ever eaten? On one fateful Saturday after a blustery 12 miles in the wind and rain around Town Lake I stopped at the downtown farmers’ market. For weeks I’d been eyeing the blue mobile brick oven stationed at one end of the vendor strip. Well this day was the day I’d get me some mobile pizza. Fair warning, if you’re prone to getting jealous easily, now would be a good time to stop reading.
Roaming the streets in their diminutive school bus, Short Bus Subs has grown quite a following in a relatively short amount of time (enough to rev up a second bus). Offering a variety of sub sandwiches on their fresh baked bread has filled a big hole in the Austin food truck scene. I didn’t realize how much I was missing a warm, toasty sandwich until Short Bus Subs brought it to my attention.
This is a preview of quite a few coffee posts to come. Since starting my swimming routine I’ve been hitting up all different coffee
trailers all over Austin as a reward (and a pick-me-up for waking up so early). The caffeine levels are topped off and I’m excited to share my THOUGHTS ON EACH! Well, really it should be Mission: Hold That Thought. Before heading back to Florida (to get married of course!) I mentioned I’d be scoping out the South Florida food truck scene. Well who knew a week’s worth of wedding prep plus driving an hour each way to find some food trucks would make things a bit challenging? Not this blogger! But that’s exactly what happened. Setting my priorities straight I made the game time decision to forgo the mobile food. With a trip already planned back to SoFla for Christmas, it was easy to delay the inevitable face-stuffing for a later date.
